Out-Of-This World Emergency Care

Colorful spaceships and twinkling stars welcome young patients and their families to the newly renovated Pediatric Emergency Room (ER) at the Children's Medical Center at Summerlin Hospital.

Truly kid-friendly, the new space has eight pediatric rooms -- twice as many as before. Larger rooms with doors, not curtains, separate children from other patients.

"The ER expansion, including the updated Pediatric ER, was uniquely designed to not only help expedite care, but to provide patients with a more comfortable and private environment when receiving that care," said Robert Freymuller, CEO/Managing Director at Summerlin Hospital.

The Pediatric ER is specially outfitted with kid-sized equipment, beds and supplies, including:

  • Lifesaving defibrillators customized for children
  • Child-sized blood pressure cuffs
  • Systems that quickly identify equipment and medicines appropriate for a child's age and weight
"All of this allows doctors and nurses to work with children in a different way than they work with adult patients," said Michelle Dimoff, RN, Emergency Room Director at Summerlin Hospital.

Doctors, nurses and other staff members continue to provide the high-quality care you expect. Doctors in the Pediatric ER have received extra training in pediatric emergencies and must pass a test that certifies them as pediatric emergency physicians. They're trained to deal with emergencies that may require unique techniques or procedures, or use special equipment. Also, they specialize in easing the pain and anxiety that children's emergencies can cause families.

Do You Need Emergency Care?
When an accident happens, you'll need to make a quick decision about whether to seek emergency care. If you aren't sure, please call 911 and speak to a professional.

What would you do in these situations?

  1. Your son burns his hand on the stove.
    Emergency Treat at home
  2. Your daughter cuts her hand, and the edges of the wound are jagged.
    Emergency Treat at home
  3. Your little one gets a nosebleed.
    Emergency Treat at home

Check Your Answers

  1. Treat at home. But if the skin looks white or charred, go to the emergency room.
  2. Emergency. The same is true if the wound is deep or won't stop bleeding after 10 minutes of direct pressure.
  3. Treat at home. But get help if the bleeding doesn't stop after 15 minutes, or if the nose started bleeding after an injury.
